What is a credit lock?

A credit lock is a service that blocks third parties from checking your credit report or credit file held by a credit reporting agency, making it harder to open credit accounts in your name. Since taking out new loans requires creditors to check the applicant’s credit report, locking access to your file at TransUnion with NordProtect’s Credit Lock feature helps prevent many dangerous consequences of identity theft and fraud.

How does a credit lock work?

When you toggle Credit Lock on in your NordProtect dashboard, it notifies our partner TransUnion to block new credit application inquiries into your file. Due to our arrangements with TransUnion, the effect is immediate — your credit report becomes locked from the moment you click the toggle and confirm your choice. And when you want to regain full access back to apply for a mortgage or a credit card, disabling Credit Lock is just as easy and just as fast.

Why do you need
a credit lock?

NordProtect’s Credit Lock feature is an important component in your defenses against identity theft.

If you believe you’re in danger of identity theft (for example, if you reveal sensitive information to scammers online), NordProtect’s Credit Lock can be used to close off some easy avenues for fraud.

FAQ

To block new credit application inquiries into your TransUnion file, go to your NordProtect dashboard and open the “Financial monitoring” tab. Click the “TransUnion Credit Lock” toggle under your VantageScore® 3.0 credit score summary — your credit lock will take effect immediately.

Credit Lock protects against identity fraud and theft attempts by blocking a vital step in new credit applications, but it does not prevent all instances of abuse. Determined criminals may be able to exploit your existing lines of credit or simply engage in identity fraud by other means (for example, by accessing your bank account using a stolen device). NordProtect includes robust online fraud coverage and identity theft recovery services to further protect you.

To remove Credit Lock, go to your NordProtect dashboard and open the “Financial monitoring” tab. Then, set the “TransUnion Credit Lock” toggle under your VantageScore® 3.0 credit score summary to “Off” and confirm your choice. The lock on your TransUnion credit report will be removed immediately.

You can always check whether your Credit Lock is active in the “Financial monitoring” tab of your NordProtect dashboard. You will see a “TransUnion Credit Lock” toggle below your VantageScore® 3.0 credit score summary — if it’s ON, you’ve blocked inquiries into your TransUnion credit report.

If you’re worried about having a credit lock in place after switching to NordProtect from another provider, rest easy — a credit lock will be carried over from other services even if you don’t separately enable it on NordProtect for seamless protection.

Credit locks and credit freezes serve very similar functions — both block inquiries into your credit report to prevent malicious actors from taking on debt in your name. The main differences lie in timing, convenience, and pricing. A credit freeze is free, but it must be arranged separately with credit reporting agencies and may take up to 24 hours to take effect. A credit lock, on the other hand, is a paid service (like NordProtect’s Credit Lock) that activates immediately with the click of a button.
